American Hot Rod takes a close-up view of one of the world's most celebrated hot rod builders – the legendary Boyd Coddington. Follow Boyd and his team – Roy, the shop supervisor; Charley, the lead fabricator; and Duane, who oversees each rod's internals – for all of the drama, comedy and tension as they conceive and construct some of the finest classic cruisers.

'42 Woodie 1
To boost morale in the shop, Boyd decides to start a fun new project: a classic '42 Woodie. However, no one else in the shop seems excited by the build, especially when they find out they have less than eight weeks to complete the project in time for its debut at the big car show in Hawaii. On a tight schedule and with a less than stellar attitude in the shop, this build might not make it out of the starting blocks.

With time winding down, the boys put the pedal to the metal to get the Woodie to the body shop. But when Duane becomes too stressed out to work, Boyd suggests he take a mini-vacation…a decision that creates a stir in the garage. On top of that, Charley confides to Beetle that he is considering a job offer from another shop.

As the excited crew gathers to watch Boyd turn the ignition on the just-completed '42 Woodie, they discover a major leak – adding several more hours to the shop's most taxing build yet. Eventually, the souped-up neo-classic makes its way to Hawaii and proves to be a huge success. But victory doesn't bring out the best in everyone, as Boyd and Charley remain at odds over the shop's direction. In a stunning conclusion, Charley quits to take a job with Boyd's rival shop.
